I Am a Fear Fighter: Overcoming Fear with Faith

By C. Jillian Gray

Fear. It’s one of the biggest obstacles that can hold us back from walking fully in our purpose. It can paralyze us, stop us from making bold moves, and keep us from stepping into what God has for us. But what if I told you that fear doesn’t have to be the enemy? That, in fact, you could move with fear and even use it as fuel? Today, we’re diving deep into overcoming fear and how we can stand firm in faith despite it.

What Would You Do If Fear Wasn’t Holding You Back?

Take a moment and ask yourself: Who would I be if fear wasn’t a factor? What business would I start? What dream would I chase?

For me, the declaration “I am a Fear Fighter” isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s a daily commitment. Fear tries to show up at every level of life, but learning how to identify it, move against it, and sometimes move with it is the key to victory.

Understanding Fear: Emotion vs. Spirit

Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the anticipation or awareness of danger. But fear comes in different forms:

1️⃣ Irrational Fear – This is fear that makes no sense. Like walking on a strong bridge but being afraid the wind will blow you over.

2️⃣ Rational Fear – This is based on real threats, like being cautious in an unfamiliar neighborhood at night.

Then, there’s a deeper level:

🔹 Fear as an Emotion vs. The Spirit of Fear

  • Fear as an emotion is normal; it comes when we analyze a situation.

  • The spirit of fear, however, is sent by the enemy to keep us stagnant, hesitant, and unsure of ourselves.

Did you know that “fear not” appears in the Bible 365 times? That’s one for every single day of the year! God knew this would be a battle we’d face regularly.

Moving Against Fear

Fear is often loud, just like the roaring lion in 1 Peter 5:8:

📖 "Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."

When we face fear head-on, we need a God-fidence—a confidence that God is standing with us. Look at the story of the three Hebrew boys in Daniel 3:9. They faced their fears with boldness, knowing that even if God didn’t rescue them, they would still stand firm in faith.

To move against fear, you need truth that is louder than the noise of fear. Declare scripture over yourself. Stand tall. Face fear like David faced Goliath—with faith and authority!

Moving With Fear

Sometimes, instead of resisting fear, we need to use it as a tool to propel us forward.

🔹 Fear as an Indicator – Sometimes, that racing heart and nervous energy before a big decision isn’t a sign to stop, but a signal that you’re stepping into something powerful.

🔹 Fear as Fuel – When fear shows up, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol—giving you the energy and sharpness to take action. Instead of letting it paralyze you, let it activate you.

Even Joshua in the Bible had to be reminded over and over: "Do not fear, for I am with you." He was leading thousands of people into the Promised Land—of course, fear tried to creep in! But he chose to move forward anyway.

Biblical Examples of Fear Fighters

🔹 Joshua – God had to repeatedly tell him not to fear because he hadn’t conquered it yet. His calling was huge, and fear tried to block him from stepping into his assignment.

🔹 Gideon – We often think Gideon’s story is about laying out a fleece to test God. But in reality? Gideon was afraid to believe what God was telling him. He needed extra confirmation before moving. Yet, once he was sure, he executed the battle strategy fearlessly.

Practical Ways to Overcome Fear

So how do we fight fear in our daily lives? Here are some practical strategies:

1. Identify Your Fear

  • Ask: Is this fear rational or irrational?

  • Identify patterns—what triggers this fear?

  • Decide: Do I need to move against it or with it?

2. Use the Word of God

  • Speak scripture over yourself!

  • Example: Isaiah 41:10"Do not fear, for I am with you."

3. Worship Through Fear

  • When fear whispers doubts, worship louder.

  • Worship corrects our perspective and aligns us with the heart of the Father. It is a surrender like no other.

4. Create a Strategy

  • Write down your fear, then write down the Word of God that combats it.

  • Example: If you fear failure, write Philippians 1:6"He who began a good work in you will complete it."

5. Do It Afraid – Over and Over Again

  • Confidence doesn’t come from waiting for fear to leave—it comes from taking action despite fear.

Final Thoughts: You Are a Fear Fighter!

Fear will always try to show up in new levels of your life. But it doesn’t have to stop you. You have the power to stand against fear, move with it when necessary, and use it to propel you into purpose.
